Out of all the solutions posted regarding Java install problems, I gleaned one thing: A re-install of Java and a re-install of Firefox may well solve the problem.
Well, for me, thus far, it has.
The simple steps I followed:
1. Create Restore Point (Control Panel, search "Create Restore Point")
2. Uninstall my version of Java (Control Panel, "Uninstall a program")
3. Reboot
4. Download Firefox latest version (for me, was version 19.0.2, into my Downloads folder)
5. Download AND install latest Java (right now, version 7, update 17 @java.com)
6. reboot
7. Install latest Firefox (double-click on "Firefox Setup 19.0.2" application in my Downloads folder)
8. Started Firefox (NOTE: my current extensions and plugins were not affected) and went to my favorite website which requires Java.
9. THANK GOODNESS, it worked! (NOTE: it did keep asking me if I wanted to RUN THIS APPLICATION)
.
I hope this works for you.
(Technical Note: From all the solutions posted I did take note that it becomes evident Registry entries are not updated, or are removed. The re-installation of Java (after removal and reboot) and the re-installation of Firefox solved "my" problem).
